How To Care For Your Wool Carpet

CARING FOR YOUR WOOL CARPET

With proper care your carpet will give you many years of enjoyment and comfort. Wool carpet is like many other natural products, which become more beautiful with age and use. Proper vacuuming with a good adjustable upright vacuum on a regular basis is essential. You need to make sure you set your vacuum so that the brushes barely touch the face of the carpet. Wool carpet will shed immediately after installation. This is normal and the shedding will dissipate within a short period of time with proper vacuuming. Your vacuum cleaner dust bag should be emptied when half full. Your vacuum will remove foot borne dry soil. For accidents and spills that occur please refer to our information chart for cleaning your wool carpet.

  • The naturally scaly surface of wool makes it naturally resistant to soiling. Soil will be held high in the carpet pile where it can be easily removed by vacuuming.
  • Wool has natural elasticity so it stands up to everyday wear and tear and resists unsightly crushing from furniture.
  • Wool has a natural protective outer layer that prevents water-based spills from penetrating into the fiber.

Combined with an effective maintenance plan, these natural attributes make it easy to look after your wool carpet or rug.

All you have to do is follow the three simple steps set out below:

VACUUMING

When it comes to keeping your carpet looking good and hygienically clean, you can never vacuum too often. As a rule, vacuum at least once a week, more often in heavy traffic areas. Be thorough when you vacuum under furniture, behind curtains and where your carpet meets the wall.

QUICK TIPS:
  • Be sure your vacuum cleaner is suitable for your type of carpet. Follow the advice of the carpet manufacturer or your retailer.
  • If your vacuum has a bag, empty it regularly to ensure the vacuum doesn’t lose suction.
  • DO NOT use a self-adjusting vacuum since they adjust too deeply into the pile and will cause excessive fuzzing.
  • DO NOT use an overly stiff brush on the beater bar since this too will cause excessive fuzzing.
  • DO NOT use any vacuum made by Oreck or Dyson as these will cause excessive fuzzing.
  • No claims will be accepted when an Oreck or Dyson vacuum is used.
  • It is important to remember to move the vacuum cleaner slowly to allow time to remove soil, and above all, make sure that the dust bag is never more than half full. Remember you cannot over vacuum, and vacuuming should begin the day the carpet is installed.
CLEAN SPILLS IMMEDIATELY

ACTING QUICKLY can prevent stains easily when spills occur. Even when time is not on your side, using the correct cleaning agent, you’ll be delighted with the difference you can make.

Pet & Kid-Friendly Carpet
New manufacturing technologies have given many carpets outstanding new stain resistance, durability and other formerly unavailable characteristics that now make them kid and pet-friendly floor coverings. They are certainly ideal choices for families with kids and pets.

Pet owners looking for new carpet are most concerned with two characteristics: stain resistance and durability. They know that pet accidents as well as wear and tear from playful pets and youngsters can certainly take a toll on your carpet shorten its useable lifespan, and make effective cleaning a formidable task.

Today, carpet is a good choice for floor covering if you have pets. Wall-to-wall carpeting is more comfortable for pets and safer for youngsters who tend to fall down during play. Carpet is also a non-slip surface that can be safer for animals, whose footpads will usually slip and slide on tile or hardwood flooring. Also important, carpet will absorb sounds and make your home a more serene living environment.

Carpet of earlier times could contribute to asthma and allergies by amassing dust, allergens and pet dander in its fibers. The Carpet and Rug Institute has said that carpet is actually the best flooring choice for allergy sufferers, as long as it is vacuumed often and deep cleaned on a regular basis. Most allergy experts, however, still recommend hardwood or tile flooring. However, even though these products don’t collect such substances, they stay on it and are moved about by foot traffic unless swept and mopped frequently.

CARPETS MADE EXPRESSLY FOR PETS

Some carpets have been designed to prevent pet stains from soaking through to the carpet padding underneath it, where the moisture can promote the growth of bacteria and mold. You might consider carpet tiles as well, as they make it easier to replace damaged sections of the carpet. Some colors or patterns also disguise the presence of pet hair better than others too, so consider this when you select new carpet.

Once your beautiful, new, pet and kid-friendly carpet has been installed, be certain to clean it frequently and well. By keeping your carpet clean and dry, you will prevent mold, mildew and bacteria from growing. To regularly care for your carpet most effectively, consider choosing a new vacuum cleaner approved by The Carpet and Rug Institute’s ‘Green Label’ program. These cleaners can reduce airborne dust by as much as 95%.

Nylon carpet is superior to all other fibers in resilience, durability, and easier maintenance. Consider this seriously if you want your carpet to last a decade or more, when installed in high-traffic areas or in homes with kids and pets.

Triexta brands including SmartStrand® and Sorona® are recently classified fibers partly comprised of corn sugar. They provide excellent, permanent anti-stain properties as well as great resilience. Thanks to their superior stain resistance, they are good choices if your family includes young children or pets.

The Pros & Cons Of Vinyl Flooring

Pros

  • 100% Moisture Resistant
  • Commercial Grade Wear Layer
  • Fiberglass Reinforced
  • Antistatic
  • Can Be Used On A Variety Of Sub-Floors
  • Can Be Floated Or Glued Down
  • Natural Wood Or Tile Look
  • Low Maintenance
  • Affordable And Provides A Warmer Feel Than Classic Tile

Cons

  • Difficult To Remove If Glued Down
  • Can Be Punctured With Very Sharp Objects
  • Does Not Have A Wood Feel Like Laminate Or Hardwood
  • Not Biodegradable

The Pros Explained

The biggest advantage of vinyl plank flooring is the fact that it is 100% water resistant. This makes it the ideal flooring solution for spaces such as basements, kitchens and bathrooms. In addition, vinyl plank flooring is very durable with commercial grade wear layers and fiberglass reinforcement. Vinyl can be installed on nearly any subfloor, with the thicker floors being forgiving to imperfect subfloors. Luxury vinyl plank flooring can be floating or glued down, which is something that may be attractive to homeowners. The affordability, durability and natural wood look make vinyl plank flooring a great option for busy spaces without the price tag of authentic wood.

The Cons Explained

As with any product, there are disadvantages associated with vinyl plank flooring. If you choose to glue down your vinyl plank flooring, the removal process is known to be very difficult. If you are installing vinyl as a temporary solution, it is recommended you avoid glue to make the removal as easy as possible. Vinyl plank flooring is very durable, however it can be punctured with very sharp objects. For example, if a kitchen knife gets dropped with the point down on the vinyl plank flooring, it is likely there will be a visible scar. Vinyl plank flooring also does not have the wood feel of laminate or especially hardwood. When walking on vinyl flooring with shoes, it does not have the rich wooden sound a natural wood floor would. Unfortunately, vinyl plank flooring is not biodegradable and can be very difficult to recycle. For environmentally conscious consumers, laminate flooring might be a better option since is it fully recyclable.
